Every track has a starting point. Sometimes it’s a melody, sometimes a kick, sometimes a sample you weren’t even planning to use. For ‘Mega Funk’, the starting point was something very personal — my own rap vocals.
I didn’t plan it. I didn’t sit down thinking, “I’m going to merge my old hip-hop life with my current techno sound.” But the moment I chopped up my vocals and laid them over a groove, everything else came naturally. It felt like I unlocked a part of myself I’d ignored for years.
Where the Idea Came From
The direct inspiration was ‘That’s the Funk Assault’ by Funk Assault. That track didn’t just influence me — it gave me permission. It took two worlds I love and smashed them together without hesitation. Hearing it made something click:
“Why am I keeping my hip-hop side and my techno side separated? They’re both me.”
‘Mega Funk’ was born the moment I stopped seeing my influences as separate lanes.
How the Track Started
The first thing I built was the vocal chop. I recorded, chopped, and processed my own rap vocals until they became rhythmic elements rather than “rap verses.” Once I had that foundation, the rest started to fall into place:
- A driving techno drum groove
- A bassline built around the vocal movement
- High-energy stabs and textures to give it attitude
It wasn’t a complicated beginning — it was honest. And that’s why it worked.
The Hardest Part
Finishing the track. I’ll admit it — completing music is one of my biggest battles. I have hundreds of ideas, loops, half-tracks… but seeing something through to the end is a different skill entirely.
The second hardest part was choosing sounds that didn’t feel cheesy or too obvious. When you’re working with vocals, especially your own, it’s easy to lean into clichés. I wanted the track to feel raw, confident, and modern — not like a nostalgia gimmick.
Getting that balance right took time.
What Makes It “Mine”
It’s hard to explain, but I hear something consistent across everything I’ve produced — even though I couldn’t put it into words. Maybe it’s my sense of rhythm, maybe it’s my structure, maybe it’s just the way I build energy. But whatever “my sound” is, it’s there.
‘Mega Funk’ feels like me because it doesn’t choose between the different parts of who I am. It is hip-hop. It is techno. It is groove. It is attitude. And it’s the first time I fully allowed myself to blend all of that without overthinking it.
This track is a reminder that the most honest music happens when you stop trying to fit into a lane and just follow the idea that excites you the most.
