Strip-Mining Melodies: Why I Sourced a Used Teenage Engineering PO-16 Factory

There is a slippery slope in electronic music production where you convince yourself that you need a €2,000 modular wall to make compelling underground music. Recently, I decided to go completely the other way. I wanted a raw, hardware-based limitation to break out of the digital grid.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks deep in a YouTube rabbit hole, analyzing live jam videos and workflow breakdowns. After tracking down a used unit online, it’s currently in transit to my studio. I haven’t even laid hands on the physical buttons yet, but the architecture alone has already rewired how I’m planning my next production sessions. Here is why I picked the Teenage Engineering PO-16 Factory based purely on sonic theory.

The Hardware Hook: Why the PO-16?

The PO-16 Factory is an ultra-portable, monophonic lead synthesizer and sequencer. While many producers jump straight to the PO-12 (Rhythm) or PO-33 (KO) samplers, I specifically hunted down the Factory because of its internal synthesis engines. It pairs multiple flavors of synthesis—ranging from FM (Frequency Modulation), subtractive synthesis, to wavetable modeling—with a built-in micro drum machine on key 16.

For a producer working primarily within Techno and Tech House structures, the live jams I watched revealed something highly prized: raw grit. It doesn’t sound clean; it sounds beautifully clinical, lo-fi, and industrial.

Tearing Down the Grid with Parameter Locks

What sold me completely through the screen was watching how producers handle Parameter Locking. Even on this tiny circuit board, you can hold down the Write button while twisting the two analog potentiometers to record live knob tweaks directly into your 16-step sequence.

  • Knob A controls note pitch or engine characteristics.
  • Knob B manipulates note length and filter style.

Watching performers combine these tweaks with its built-in 16 punch-in play styles (like arpeggios, chords, and transpositions) showed me how easy it is to generate complex, shifting melodic loops that feel organic and unpredictable, rather than statically programmed.

Future Integration into Ableton Live 12

My main production workspace is built entirely around Ableton Live 12. My goal when this pocket machine arrives isn’t to leave the DAW behind, but to use the PO-16 as a melodic spark generator. Because it features a 3.5mm stereo click-sync input/output, I am planning to route an audio pulse from Ableton to clock-sync the PO-16 perfectly to my project tempo (resting anywhere from 126 BPM for Tech House up to 140 BPM for driving hypnotic techno).

Instead of drawing MIDI notes with a mouse, I’ll be programming rhythms on raw buttons, capturing the dirty analog audio out via my interface, and chopping those waveforms back into Ableton’s sampler loops. The unit is still a week away from arriving, but the layout is already integrated into the plan.
